Zimbabwe Power Company hand over 29 houses to families displaced by powerline

THE Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) yesterday handed over 29 houses built in Hope Fountain on the outskirts of Bulawayo for families displaced by the new 400kv power transmission line under the Hwange Thermal Power Station Units 7 and 8 expansion project.

In total, 72 houses each with a separate kitchen, ablution facilities and a kraal, among other basic necessities, will be constructed along the 310km powerline.

The modern houses will completely transform the lives of the affected families as their accommodation is almost similar to what is found in towns and cities.

Minister of Energy and Power Development, Soda Zhemu, who was accompanied by Zesa Holdings senior management, handed over the 29 completed houses. The sizes of houses range from two-roomed to four-roomed units.

The homestead has a separate, spacious kitchen with a thatched roof, a toilet and a kraal. In his remarks, Minister Zhemu said ZPC had fulfilled its promise to the affected families of Umguza District.

“Today we stand here grateful for the support that we have received from the province, the community, the traditional chiefs, the parent ministry, the resident minister, and the Government of Zimbabwe. We’re in this endeavour constructing 72 houses with a kitchen, ablution facilities, a kraal, among other basic necessities in a rural home, along the 310kms of our new powerline corridor,” said Minister Zhemu.

The scope of the project includes 29 homes at Mazwi, nine at Hope Fountain, 10 at Heany Farm, three at Kloof Farm, four at Stevenson Farm, 11 at Epping Forest, one at Sawmills and five at Gwayi siding, Bambanani Village and Chezhou.

Minister Zhemu told beneficiaries that the Relocation Action Plan was necessitated by the building of two new power station units, Unit 7 and Unit 8 under the US$1,5 billion Hwange Expansion Project.

“The project is aimed at reducing the power demand shortage by adding 600MW to the national grid bringing our national total installed capacity to 2 900MW. The scope of the new units entailed construction of a new 310km 400KV power line that complies with the requirements of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) grid code, a community of which we are a member,” he said.

“As such, there was a need to clear the corridor of the powerline creating a wayleave of 30m from the centre of the lone on either side.”

Minister Zhemu said when ZPC, through the Hwange Expansion Project (HEP) initially started the Relocation Action Plan project, it was purely to satisfy the requirements of the project’s Environmental and Social Impact assessment report for the Hwange Expansion Project to the nation.

However, as the project took shape, it was realised that there was more than what was envisaged, that among the families that are relocating, there were marginalised groups, widows and orphans.

“We have a child-headed family at Hope Fountain that we are moving to Heany Farm and providing decent accommodation for them gives us greater purpose,” said Minister Zhemu. In a speech read on his behalf, Minister of State for Matebeleland North Provincial Affairs and Devolution Richard Moyo said the construction of the houses is expected to greatly improve the livelihoods of community members through provision of decent accommodation, employment opportunities during the tenure of the project and value creation.

Mr Moyo said although the homesteads are geospatially spaced along the corridor of the power line, the excitement is shared by all.

“Hwange Expansion Project will result in an additional 600MW being fed into the national grid. We are blessed and grateful as a province, to have the opportunity of housing one of the single largest project investments the country has seen in the last 30 years,” he said.

“We are here witnessing a promise fulfilment by Zesa as was communicated during our combined project initiation engagements. In addition, we witnessed construction of these households by indigenous companies bearing witness to the Second Republic’s commitment to black empowerment,” said Minister Moyo.

He urged the beneficiaries to take good care of the homesteads as this was part of their inheritance.

“I am pleased to say that this project has actually left all those affected in a better state than they were before. It is now up to you to play your part by looking after these homesteads.”

Teen maid robs homeowners

A 19-year-old woman has been arrested for theft, after posing as a maid only to ransack a Nkulumane home and steal US$300, ZAR800 and various clothing items worth US$60.

It is suspected the teen could have robbed several homeowners using the same method.

Bulawayo province deputy spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, confirmed the arrest of Charity Dube.

She said Dube was arrested after police received a tip-off from members of the public that she was at her boyfriend’s residence in Lobengula, after a wanted persons’ warrant was issued.

“Police in Bulawayo arrested Charity Dube, a female adult aged 19 years for theft. She was employed at a house in Nkulumane as a maid. While the complainant was at work she stole usd$300 and ZAR 800 and various clothing valued at usd$60 and went away,” said Ast Ins Msebele.

Added Ast Ins Msebele: “On the 20th of June 2023, police got a tip off from the members of the public that the accused person was at her boyfriend’s place of residence in Lobengula and that led to her arrest.  We call upon members of the public who did not report their cases which could have occurred using a similar method by the accused person to visit the nearest police station.

“We also urge members of the public to vet their maids before they employ them and to report all cases so that when we arrest such people it becomes easy to link them up.”

She said Dube would soon appear in court to answer for the charges.

UK Rejects Zim Metal Drivers Licences

The United Kingdom (UK) is refusing to recognise metal driver’s licences for Zimbabweans living in that country.

This comes after the Zimbabwean Government recently launched plastic driver’s licences to replace metal discs.

The new licence has 13 categories which conform to the requirement of the United Nations Convention on Road Traffic International Organisation for Standardisation and International Electro-Technical Commission.

Source  has established that Zimbabweans living in the UK are failing to get their metal licences converted for use in that country.

The UK’s Driver’s Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) is refusing to convert the licences saying the old metal licences no longer meet the criteria set by the Central Vehicle Registry (CVR) in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabweans are now required to obtain an original “Certificate of Competency” to have their licences converted for use in the UK.

A certificate of competency is a temporary licence valid for 30 days which is issued to drivers who have passed the practical test at the Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID).A Zimbabwean living in the UK told NewsDay that the development has affected a lot of care workers. Said the Zimbabwean national:

Affected are a lot of care workers who have to drive from client to client to provide their services. Also affected are Zimbabwean drivers in the UK who had been using their licences temporarily before converting.

Responding in an email to Zimbabweans who had sought the embassy’s assistance, the consular officer for Ambassador Tendai Chimbandi said:

The embassy has been consulting with DVLA and they have specified that for purposes of converting a licence they will only accept the Certificate of Competency (Blue paper issued by CVR to a person who has completed their driving test in Zimbabwe) and without it, they are not prepared to convert.

Regrettably, most people discard this document upon issuance of the metal disc.

Without the Certificate of Competency, UK DVLA has insisted that to drive in the UK, an applicant will have to complete the practical and theory tests.

The Government says the plastic licence enables Zimbabweans to drive in Angola, Botswana, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Libya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and Zambia, without conversion.

BCC partners Dutch company for water recycling

BULAWAYO City Council (BCC) has partnered Dutch company, Vitens Evides International (VEI), in a waste water recycling project. The project was officially launched on Friday. BCC engineering services director Sikhumbuzo Ncube said the city must use waste water for other purposes apart from drinking as the city battles a water crisis.

“We noticed that waste water is something we should consider as important in Bulawayo. This water can also be used by people in their gardens, farms and industries,” Ncube said.

“Reclaimed water is a source we cannot ignore. The amount of water we collect from these dams is slowly and gradually decreasing each year. We need to be looking for other sources of water. We want to complement the Gwayi- Shangani Dam project by recycling waste water.”

Bulawayo residents are going for days without water due to dwindling water levels at the city’s supply dams. VEI waterworks project manager Robson Manatsa said they would be working with Bulawayo until 2026 under the waste water recycling project.

“Our idea is to help exchange knowledge and ideas, and expose the City of Bulawayo to how water operators work. Our Dutch experts will also be sharing experiences and knowledge they have gathered in the Netherlands with similar projects,” Manatsa said.

Bulawayo once announced plans to purify the heavily polluted Khami Dam water for drinking. The idea was shot down by residents and other stakeholders. Khami Dam was built in 1928 and was decommissioned in 1988 due to heavy pollution. Recycling of Khami Dam water has been part of the city’s medium-term plan towards addressing Bulawayo’s perennial water challenges.

Ran Mine Collapses Again, Several Miners Feared Dead

Several artisanal miners are feared dead after a shaft collapsed at the Ran Mine in Bindura on Thursday afternoon. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating the incident. According to a statement by the ZRP, about four miners are suspected to be trapped in the shaft. The police are currently on the site, and more details will be released as the investigation progresses. Reads the statement:

The ZRP is investigating a suspected trapping incident which occurred at Ranmine , Gwiringwindi area, Bindura on 22/06/23 at around 1600 hours. In a statement, ZRP said Police are the scene where it is being suspected that about four artisanal miners were trapped when a mine shaft collapsed.

ZRP said more details will be released as the investigation progresses.

The same shaft was previously the site of an incident in November 2020 where 12 people lost their lives.

Gold mine collapses are frequent in Zimbabwe, especially in small-scale operations. These accidents are due to unstable ground conditions, inadequate safety equipment, and poor mining practices. In some instances, collapses cause injuries, fatalities, and environmental damage. The government and mining stakeholders have been working together to enhance safety regulations and provide training and equipment to miners, but limited resources and enforcement issues challenge these efforts.

Titanic submersible suffered ‘catastrophic loss’ of pressure, killing all aboard, Coast Guard says

The Titanic submersible that’s been missing for days suffered a catastrophic loss of pressure that imploded the vessel, killing all five passengers onboard, the Coast Guard said Thursday.

Coast Guard Rear Adm. John Mauger said a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) had discovered a portion of the Titan roughly 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic wreck on the sea floor.

“The debris is consistent with the catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber,” Mauger said at a news conference. “Upon this determination we immediately notified the families.”

Just before the news conference, an OceanGate spokesman told The Washington Post that the passengers “have sadly been lost.”

7 Best Health Benefits of Tomatoes

You might be surprised to learn that the tomato on your kitchen counter is a low-calorie package chock-full of nutrients. To reap the benefits, you can incorporate tomatoes into your diet in a number of ways, such as fresh, dried or as sauce, salsa, or paste.

Try adding fresh tomatoes to omelets and salads, or serve them sliced, drizzled with balsamic vinegar, and garnished with fresh basil, sea salt, and cracked black pepper. Dress steamed veggies with sun-dried tomato pesto, or toss spaghetti squash or beans with tomato sauce. Add salsa to scrambled eggs or taco salad, or spoon onto cooked fish, black beans, or brown rice. Tomato paste adds rich texture and flavor to veggie chili, or you can mix it into hummus, with roasted garlic and harissa.

The good news? Tomatoes aren’t just tasty, they’re healthy too. Here are seven of their biggest benefits.1. Tomatoes are a great source of vitamins.
A single tomato can provide about 40% of the daily recommended minimum of vitamin C. What’s more, tomatoes supply vitamin A, which supports immunity, vision, and skin health, and vitamin K, which is good for your bones. Tomatoes also provide potassium, a key nutrient for heart function, muscle contractions, and maintaining healthy blood pressure and fluid balance.

2. They protect heart health.
Tomatoes contain an antioxidant called lycopene (which also gives them their red color). Studies have shown that higher blood levels of lycopene are linked to lower death rates among people with metabolic syndrome (a cluster of risk factors that raise the chances of developing heart disease, diabetes, and stroke).

3. They support healthy vision.
Lycopene is good for your eyes, too. And that’s not the only peeper-protective nutrient in tomatoes; they contain lutein and beta carotene as well. These nutrients support vision and protect against eye conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

4. They boost digestive health.
The fluid and fiber in tomatoes may be helpful if you’re prone to constipation. (According to the USDA, one large tomato contains 6 ounces of fluid and 1.5 grams of fiber.) Just be aware that in some people, the acidity from cooked tomatoes may trigger or worsen acid reflux and indigestion.

5. They may help fend off diabetes complications.
Tomatoes may be a protective food for people with type 2 diabetes. In one study, people with diabetes who supplemented with cooked tomatoes for 30 days experienced a decrease in lipid peroxidation (a chain reaction in which substances called free radicals attack fat, leading to damage that ups the risk of heart disease).

6. They can contribute to skin health.
Research has found that the combination of tomato paste and olive oil protects against sun damage and boosts the production of pro-collagen, a molecule that gives the skin its structure and keeps it firm. Scientists believe that the lycopene in tomatoes is key: It’s at its highest concentration in cooked tomatoes (while olive oil boosts its absorption from your digestive system into your bloodstream).

7. They may help protect against cancer.
Observational studies have found links between consumption of tomato’s superstar compound, lycopene, and fewer incidences of prostate, ovarian, lung, and stomach cancers.

SUMMARY OF EATING RAW TOMATOES

Studies show that eating raw tomatoes eases inflammation, boost your immune system, lower your cholesterol levels, and keep your blood from clotting. All those things may help prevent strokes.
