Primary School Pupil Survives Kidnapping Incident

Two men wearing face masks and driving a car followed a child after school and grabbed and doused her with a whitish substance’
ZVISHAVANE – A pupil at Shabani Primary School in Zvishavane survived a kidnapping attempt by two masked men who seized the minor on her way home and tried to shove her in their vehicle. The shock incident was revealed in a letter by the school’s headmistress who went on to implore parents to ensure their children were also safe outside school premises.

In a letter addressed to parents, the school head, who only signed off as Matutu, said the attempted kidnapping took place on June 8.Two men wearing face masks and driving a car followed a child after school and grabbed and doused her with a whitish substance.

“The child was only released and saved when another car approached from behind forcing the two men to flee from the scene. The child lost her voice and regained it the following day,” Matutu said without giving details on what Grade the child was.

Matutu pleaded with parents to make sure their children were safe outside the school yard.“In light of the above near tragedy, the school is advising all parents to seriously consider the safety of their children to and from school, ensure you find reliable and reputable transporters.

“For learners that walk to school, may you ensure you accompany them to and from school,” she said.Midlands police spokesperson Emmanuel Mahoko was not readily reachable for comment.

Mai TT starts 9 months jail term

Felistus Murata, popularly known as Mai TT through her social media antics, was yesterday jailed for an effective nine months after she was this week convicted of theft of trust property after she used a hired car as surety for a loan.

The custodial sentence was lengthened by another three months from the original effective six after authorities discovered that she had defaulted on community service after a previous conviction, serving just 19 of the required 105 hours.Magistrate Mrs Munashe Sibanda, in handing down sentence, said Murata was not a good candidate for community service as she defaulted before and a fine was not deterrent enough, hence the need for a custodial sentence.

For defaulting to serve community service, Murata was sentenced to three months in jail.

For the theft of trust property charge, she was initially slapped with 12 months in jail, but six were suspended on the condition of good behaviour.

This was after the State confirmed from the community service department that indeed Murata was once convicted by a Mbare court for a domestic violence case involving her ex-husband Tawanda Mutikani in October 2015.

Then Murata was sentenced to three months in jail which were suspended on condition that she performed 105 hours of community service, but she defaulted to serve her sentence in Budiriro.

She was subsequently issued with a warrant of arrest on February 1, 2016. Challenging the issue, her lawyer Mr Admire Masango told the court that his client was not aware of the warrant.

“The warrant of arrest was never brought to Murata; she wasn’t aware,” he said. “She requested to be transferred to perform her community service from Glen View Polyclinic to Budiriro because she was being abused there.

“She was told by the Community Service Department that they will get back to her and they never did, hence she never followed up on the issue.”

Prosecutor Ms Monalisa Magwenzi in aggravation said Murata wilfully defaulted the community service  and was a dishonest person.

“Murata was aware that she was supposed to serve 105 hours, but she only performed 19 hours and stopped,” she said.

“She made no inquiries about it for eight years now.

“It was her responsibility to comply with the court’s judgment. She insisted that she was never convicted of any offense before on Wednesday in front of me, her counsel, and the community service department. This shows she is untrustworthy, her default was wilful and her warrant should be confirmed.”The State proved that Murata hired a Mercedes Benz from Else Event Car Hire last year and handed the vehicle over as collateral for a US$10 000 loan to Ms Rachel Mhuka.

Despite knowing that the hired vehicle was accumulating charges, she went to the United States without returning it to the owner. She then came back to Zimbabwe after her visa was cancelled, claimed back the Mercedes Benz saying it did not belong to her and handed over another vehicle, an Audi Q5.
That vehicle was also hired. She again reclaimed this vehicle and replaced it with an invalid passport as surety.

When Ms Mhuka realised that the passport was invalid, she confronted Murata who immediately sent back the second vehicle as security, the stolen Audi.

The Audi owner then reclaimed the vehicle from Ms Mhuka.

Reaching a Diverse Audience at the 2023 Zimbabwe International Trade Fair

The Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) was held in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, from April 25 to 29, 2023. The ZITF is one of the country’s largest exhibitions, featuring 500 exhibitors from 22 countries and attracting over 60,000 visitors. Jehovah’s Witnesses participated under the event’s education and training category.

To accommodate the many international attendees, Bible literature was made available in ten languages, including Zimbabwe Sign Language. An interactive Bible study course was also made available to those interested. By the end of the event, more than 12,000 pieces of Bible literature had been distributed and over 450 people had requested a visit from Jehovah’s Witnesses. Sister Eucebiah Mukura, who greeted visitors at the booth, noted: “Many welcomed the offer of a free interactive Bible study program. It was heartwarming to hear so many people say they looked forward to having Jehovah’s Witnesses visit them.”

The New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures was also featured at our booth. When a woman overheard someone reading from the translation aloud in the Ndebele language, she was impressed by its clarity and requested a copy for herself. Another young woman excitedly showed our sister that she had installed the JW Library app on her telephone. She explained that she did so in order to have her own copy of the New World Translation.

“The experience was thrilling,” said Sister Gillian Ellerman, who assisted visitors. “There was a nonstop flow of traffic through the booth. What a huge shout of praise to Jehovah!”

How encouraging it is to see our brothers and sisters in Zimbabwe using every opportunity to share the “accurate knowledge of truth” with others.—1 Timothy 2:4.

Cycling – health benefits

conducted over 14 years with 30,000 people aged 20 to 93 years found that regular cycling protected people from heart disease.

Cancer and cycling

Many researchers have studied the relationship between exercise and cancer, especially colon and breast cancer. Research has shown that if you cycle, the chance of bowel cancer is reduced. Some evidence suggests that regular cycling reduces the risk of breast cancer.

Diabetes and cycling

The rate of type 2 diabetes is increasing and is a serious public health concern. Lack of physical activity is thought to be a major reason why people develop this condition. Large-scale research in Finland found that people who cycled for more than 30 minutes per day had a 40 per cent lower risk of developing diabetes.

Bone injuries, arthritis and cycling

Cycling improves strength, balance and coordination. It may also help to prevent falls and fractures. Riding a bike is an ideal form of exercise if you have osteoarthritis, because it is a low-impact exercise that places little stress on joints.

Cycling does not specifically help osteoporosis (bone-thinning disease) because it is not a weight-bearing exercise.

Mental illness and cycling

Mental health conditions such as depression, stress and anxiety can be reduced by regular bike riding. This is due to the effects of the exercise itself and because of the enjoyment that riding a bike can bring.

Hand cycling and health

Hand cycles are similar to recumbent tricycles, but they are powered with hand instead of foot pedals. Velcro straps can be used to secure the hands to the pedals if necessary.

This style of tricycle allows amputees, people with spinal injuries and those recovering from certain conditions such as stroke to cycle as a form of exercise and recreation. Hand cyclists get cardiovascular and aerobic benefits similar to those of other cyclists.

Summary

Cycling can help to protect you from serious diseases such as stroke, heart attack, some cancers, depression, diabetes, obesity and arthritis.
Riding a bike is healthy, fun and a low-impact form of exercise for all ages.
Cycling is easy to fit into your daily routine by riding to the shops, park, school or work.
