You are being watched, Potraz warns citizens

VARIOUS organisations and individuals are using websites and applications to collect data on user behaviours and interests, which, combined with personal information, can be exploited and manipulated, a development which has compelled Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) to take a proactive stance to protect personal information.

Recognising the importance of safeguarding online privacy, Potraz has announced a series of public sensitisation and awareness workshops on the Cyber Data Protection Act scheduled for June 20, June 22 and June 27.

“Potraz, as the Designated Data Protection Authority of Zimbabwe, would like to inform all citizens that their online activities generate a trail of data as websites and applications collect data on among other things, individual behaviours and interests.

“Some organisations also collect and process personal information for various purposes,” said Potraz director-general Dr Gift Machengete.

“To ensure personal data is protected from abuse or manipulation, Government has enacted the Cyber and Data Protection Act (Chapter 12:07).”

He said the law ensures that individuals have better control over their personal information and that this information is processed for a legitimate purpose and in a lawful, fair and transparent manner.“In this regard, Potraz is organising public sensitisation and awareness workshops across the country to educate data subjects about their rights as enshrined under the Cyber and Data Protection Act (Chapter 12:07), beginning with Harare Province on 20, 22 and 27 June 2023,” he said.

Meanwhile, the telecommunications parastatal has expressed concern over the rising number of cases involving the sharing of intimate images and videos without consent.

The regulatory body has said that individuals engaging in such activities could face prosecution under the Data Protection Act, potentially leading to a five-year jail term.

The recent incident involving Felistas Murata, popularly known as Mai TT, a social media influencer, highlighted the challenge.

Nude pictures and videos of Murata were leaked on various social media platforms allegedly by her ex-husband.“Potraz as the designated Data Protection Authority of Zimbabwe has noted with concern the increasing number of incidents of collection, sharing, distribution and or broadcasting of intimate images and or videos without the consent of the person whose intimate images and or videos would have been shared,” said Dr Machengete.“The purpose of this notice is to advice members of the public that: 1. Intimate images and videos form part of personal information which is categorised as sensitive data under the Cyber and Data Protection Act (Chapter 12:07).

“The Act prohibits the collection, sharing and distribution of sensitive data without the consent of the data subject. 2. The Cyber and Data Protection Act (Chapter 12:07) as read with Section 164E of Criminal Law Codification & Reform Act (Chapter 9:07) prohibits the collection, transfer, sharing and or broadcasting of intimate images and or videos without the consent of the person concerned.”Dr Machengete said the law seeks to curb the humiliation and embarrassment of persons whose  intimate images and or videos would have been shared.

Post and Telecommunications Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz)

“It also empowers citizens to have control over the processing of their personal information.“This is in line with the fundamental rights to human dignity and the right to privacy as enshrined in the Constitution of Zimbabwe in Sections 51 & 57 respectively,” he said.

Dr Machengete said those found sending nudes will be liable for prosecution.

“Those who continue to collect, share, distribute and or broadcast intimate images and or videos without the consent of the data subject of the images and or videos shall be liable for imprisonment for a period up to five years or a fine up to level ten and or both such fine and such imprisonment,” said Dr Machengete.

“Members of the public are strongly advised against the collection, sharing or distribution and or broadcasting sensitive personal information, including any intimate images and or videos of any person without the consent of the data subject.”

He said the authority will take appropriate measures to protect the public from those who abuse social media.

ZESA quietly feeds power from Hwange Unit 8 into national grid

Power utility ZESA has quietly begun drawing power from Hwange Unit 8, the second of two 300 MW generating units built at a cost of US$1.4 billion, ZimLive can reveal. Testing of the coal-fired unit began on June 9, just days after tests were completed on Unit 7 which is now operating at full throttle.

Zimbabwe was generating 1,501 MW of power on Monday from the hydro power station at Kariba (761 MW) and Hwange (740 MW), while independent power producers weighed in with 287 MW for a total of 1,788 MW. The country’s electricity demand is 1,820 MW, according to ZESA data.

The addition of Hwange units 7 and 8 to the national power grid has seen ZESA easing extended outages that have impacted businesses and households.

“Hwange Unit 8 is currently producing about 220 MW after the synchronisation last Friday. We also expect the old generator, Unit 6, to come back on stream starting next week following repairs, which should add another 150 MW,” a top official in the energy ministry told ZimLive.

Energy minister Soda Zhemu is expected to announce the synchronisation of Unit 8 after a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

The two new units were built by China’s Sinohydro, with 85 percent of the funding coming from China.

Before construction work began on Units 7 and 8, Hwange had an installed capacity of 920 MW from its thermal units commissioned between 1983 and 1987, but breakdowns and ageing equipment have crippled generation, leaving Kariba to carry much of the burden.

But low water levels due to inadequate rains have seen generation from the 1,050MW Kariba South hydro station being capped at a third of its capacity.

In December, the government announced incentives to help accelerate 1,000MW solar projects worth US$1 billion planned by independent power producers, seeking to ramp up renewable power generation amid a funding freeze on coal-fired power projects as the world shifts away from the polluting fossil fuel.

POTRAZ in public awareness on Cyber and Data Protection Act

Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) is embarking on public sensitisation and awareness workshops on the Cyber and Data Protection Act (Chapter 12:07) to ensure personal data is protected from abuse or manipulation.

The exercise, which will begin next week, is aimed at educating people about their rights as enshrined in the Act.

In a statement, POTRAZ  Director-general Dr Gift Machengete said as the designated data protection authority of Zimbabwe, they would like to inform all citizens that their online activities generate a trail of data as websites and applications collect data on among other things, individual behaviours and interests.

Dr Machengete said some organisations also collect and process personal information for various purposes and to ensure personal data was protected from abuse or manipulation, Government has enacted the Cyber and Data Protection Act (Chapter 12:07).

Telecel employees declare incapacitation

TELECEL Zimbabwe employees have declared incapacitation, citing the country’s deteriorating economic situation which has seen them failing to afford transport fares to and from work.

Speaking on behalf of workers, Business, Communications and Allied Workers Union of Zimbabwe secretary-general David Mhambare said the welfare of the Telecel employees was worrying.

“We are worried as a union because workers have been reduced to destitutes as management has failed to find solutions to the challenges bedevilling the company.

“Workers are resigning in numbers and most have resorted to resigning and signing six-month contracts so that they get terminal benefits and pension from Zimnat,” Mhambare said.

He added that the lowest-paid employee was getting $70 000 plus US$100 transport, which is paid weekly.

“The salaries are not economic and are meaningless in light of the current hyperinflation environment,” he said.

The Telecel employees declared incapacitation in a letter copied to the Allied Workers Union by a member of the workers’ committee.

“This letter serves to advise that with effect from June 8, employees will not be able to report for duty as they have stated that they no longer have transport money and have fallen into serious arrears as there is no salary being paid.

“They regret to advise that they have exhausted all avenues for borrowing money for transport and basic living expenses. Staff are stating that, until remuneration issues have been resolved, they cannot afford to come to work,” the letter partly read.

“Staff regrets to state the fact that, as much as they have been very loyal to the company, and continue to report for work religiously using borrowed funds, they are in a very deep financial crisis.”

Zim receives 20 000 visitors daily

THE Immigration Department is clearing about 21 000 visitors every day, marking a significant increase in the number of inbound travellers after two years of low activity at ports of entry due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Chief director of immigration Mrs Respect Gono said five investors have visited the country so far this year to scout for investment opportunities in the tourism industry.

“We have recorded at least five investors who want to develop our tourist destination, as compared to last year, when we cleared only two,” she said.

“This is due to the drive by the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority and the Ministry of Tourism in marketing the country, which is now bringing positive results.

“These investors want to develop hotels and lodges, establish restaurants that specialise in Chinese and Indian cuisine, and also provide holiday travel, safari services and curio crafting.”

Lifting travel restrictions, she said, has helped boost tourist arrivals.

“There is an increase in the number of travellers because we are now in the post-Covid-19 era.

“On average, we have been clearing 17 500 to 21 350 travellers a day at all ports of entry and exit.”

Minister of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Mangaliso Ndlovu said Zimbabwe has recorded a more than 100 percent increase in tourist arrivals this year.

“Tourist arrivals in Zimbabwe during the first quarter of 2023 rose by 108 percent from 130 536 in 2022 to 271 188,” he said at the recent relaunch of the newly refurbished Cresta Lodge in Harare.

“A total of 1,95 million local trips were registered during the first quarter from 1,87 million trips recorded in 2022.

“Overall, domestic trips rose by 4 percent during the first quarter.”

Movement restrictions owing to Covid-19 adversely affected the tourism industry.

Zimbabwean strongman pulls 56-tonne train wagon

In a jaw-dropping revelation, Arnold Zikhali, a Zimbabwean strongman, has left his fellow countrymen stunned with his astonishing meals and daily food intake. Zikhali, who recently made headlines by effortlessly pulling a massive 56-tonne train wagon, divulged his extraordinary menu, leaving everyone in disbelief.

Contrary to what many might assume, Zikhali claims that his extraordinary feats of strength are not attributed to any supplements or steroids. “I get all my energy from food,” he proudly declared in a recent interview. He also emphasized that he is not a bodybuilder but simply someone who appreciates the power of nourishment.

Zikhali opened up about his breakfast routine, which can only be described as an Olympic-sized meal. “For breakfast, I devour two loaves of bread and an astounding 30 eggs,” he revealed. Of these eggs, 15 are boiled while the other 15 are fried, and to top it off, he adds crispy bacon to his morning extravaganza. As if his breakfast wasn’t astonishing enough, Zikhali’s lunch takes his food intake to new heights. A staggering 2 kilograms of sadza (a traditional Zimbabwean cornmeal dish) and an equal amount of relish form the foundation of his midday feast. He pairs this substantial meal with six pints of lacto and one litre of juice. To maintain hydration, Zikhali then guzzles two litres of water, and as if that weren’t enough, he further snacks on 10 oranges, 5 apples, and 15 bananas.

When questioned about his prodigious appetite, the strongman attributed it to his upbringing. “I grew up that way” Zikhali stated matter-of-factly. It seems that his early dietary habits have laid the foundation for his incredible food consumption.

Public Reaction and Speculation
Zimbabweans, upon witnessing the video showcasing Zikhali’s diet and meal plans, have expressed a range of emotions. Some have raised concerns about the economic implications of such a lavish intake, while others have marveled at the potential impact Zikhali’s energy could have on the struggling economy.
